Integrity Toys has announced their latest gift set. The Saturday Night Fever set consists of two dolls dressed as Tony Manero and Stephanie Mangano (played by John Travolta and Karen Lynn Gorney respectively). According to the press release:

To celebrate the hot moves and beats of arguably everyone’s favorite era in dance music, Integrity Toys and Paramount are proud to bring you Color Infusion’s Ollie Lawson and Fabiana Diaz in the roles of Tony Manero and Stephanie Mangano from Saturday Night Fever™!

First released in 1977, Saturday Night Fever™ is a cult-classic film about Tony Manero, a young man whose life comes alive at a local Brooklyn discotheque. It’s in the disco where Tony reigns supreme and finds the only place where he can escape the realities of his job, family and surroundings.

In addition to the success of the film, its amazing soundtrack was a catalyst to popularizing disco music worldwide. And of course, then there is… the dancing! With the music, dance and disco culture on display on the lighted dance floor, its fabulous fashions have become iconic to the era.

Due to its popularity and cultural relevance, Saturday Night Fever™ was preserved for all time by the Library of Congress in their National Film Registry.

The Stephanie doll uses Integrity’s Color Infusion female body and the Fabiana Diaz face sculpt. She has hand-applied eyelashes. The Tony doll uses the FR:Homme body and the Ollie Lawson face sculpt. Both dolls are dressed in detailed reproductions of the clothes worn by John Travolta and Karen Lynn Gorney in the film, right down to Tony Manero’s gold medallions.

The dolls will be available for pre-order starting today at noon EST from authorized Integrity dealers, and is priced at $155. The set is scheduled to ship in June.

This is a really weird coincidence because, in a nostalgic mood, I was listening to the Saturday Night Feversoundtrack on my iPod on my way to work yesterday.

Are you a fan of Saturday Nigh Fever? Will you be buying this set?

Monster High Coffin Bean Dolls

2

Ghouliette here. Last week I reviewed the Monster High Slow Mo doll, which I had been searching for for months. This week I’ll be reviewing the new trio of Coffin Bean dolls, Frankie, Abbey, and Toralei. I had also been keeping an eye out for these dolls but I never saw them in stores. I finally decided to try eBay, but only if I could get them at retail (you can read my rant about scalpers in my Slow Mo review). Coffin Bean Frankie and Abbey are available on Amazon for retail price or less, but Toralei, the most coveted doll of this line, was going for twice the retail price. Fortunately, I was able to get all three dolls as a set for a very good price because the boxes were a little damaged, which doesn’t bother me because I planned on deboxing them anyway.

1

If you’re a die-hard Monster High fan, you’ll know there is a Coffin Bean playset that comes with a Coffin Bean Clawdeen (an exclusive Costco edition came with a bonus Coffin Bean Draculaura). This trio of Frankie, Abbey, and Toralei make up Wave One of the Coffin Bean line of loose dolls. The Coffin Bean dolls are budget-line dolls, so they don’t come with a stand or a hairbrush. Their accessories are very minimal. Each doll comes with only a beverage. Frankie comes with a cup of coffee to go:

5

Abbey enjoys a frozen beverage (because being a Yeti, everything is frozen with her):

6

And Toralei? Well, I really don’t know what she’s drinking. It’s pink and comes in a mini-cauldron. But she seems to like it.

3

Each doll is dressed in a basic outfit with accessories, and of course killer shoes. Frankie wears a blouse with a nuts-and-bolts and stitches design in blue, black, and white, and a skirt with lightning bolts in yellow, black, blue, and white. Her accessories are two bracelets, and her shoes are black and white high-heeled strappy platforms. Early promo photos showed her wearing First Wave Deuce Gorgon’s cassette belt, but the actual doll doesn’t come with it. Her trademark black and white hair has a large streak of yellow in it.

11

Abbey wears a dress with a pink icicle design against a black background and black fishnet sleeves, a blue ice bracelet, and an ice belt and ice boots. The early promo photos showed a pink belt and shoes, which matched the design on her dress, but the actual doll’s accessories are purple. I don’t know why the belt and shoes were done in purple rather than pink for the final doll. I think the pink accessories of the promo photo look better. Her silvery hair has streaks of pink and blue in it.

7

12

Toralei most closely resembles her promo photos. She wears a pink, black and white sleeveless top with a slashed pattern, as if a cat had swiped it, and a red-and-black checked skirt. The slashes and checks are a recurring theme in Toralei’s outfits. The clothing for First Wave Toralei, Power Ghoul Cat-Astrophe, and Toralei’s fashion pack all use slashes and checks. Coffin Bean Toralei wears a red studded belt and a pink spiked bracelet. She’s one tough cookie. Even her shoes are clawsome.

9

13

Toralei’s tail stays in very well, too.

10

Coffin Bean Toralei has bangs, and her hair is longer than her usual bobbed hairstyle. I think the longer hair makes her look sweeter and not as nasty as she really is! But Coffin Bean Toralei’s hair is oddly choppy, as shown in the promo photo. It looks like they’re trying to go for an asymmetrical look, but it ended up looking uneven. And my Toralei’s hair is even choppier and uneven.

14

21

I like the idea to extend the Coffin Bean playset into a line of dolls. It creates more possibilities for play or photographs using the playset. It’s fun to see how Frankie, Abbey, and Toralei would look for the casual after-school activity of going out for coffee. Promo photos of Wave Two of Coffin Bean dolls are already making the rounds on the Internet. Wave Two will consist of Twyla, Venus, and Robecca, and are slated to be released later this year. Sellers on eBay are already taking pre-orders for it (again, I direct you to my scalper rant).

Oh My Ghoul, is that the issue of Monster Beat with Justgrim Reaper in it?

The Coffin Bean Frankie is cute, although she’s not my favorite Frankie (that distinction belongs to Picnic Casket Frankie). I like Coffin Bean Abbey because she’s a little different than “regular” Abbey. I like when Mattel switches up her hairstyle and clothes to make her funkier, just as they did with the Home Ick Abbey that came in a two-pack with Heath. Don’t forget, Abbey is an exchange student from the Himalayas. When they make her funkier, it’s like she’s acclimating to life at Monster High. The Coffin Bean Toralei is my favorite Toralei because I really like her with longer hair and bangs.

Well look what the cat dragged in.

Pinkie Cooper and La Dee Da on Clearance

I’ve noticed during the past few weeks on my doll-hunting expeditions that Pinkie Cooper and La Dee Da are being put on clearance. Target and Toys R Us have them marked down by about 50%. These dolls are also ending up in discount stores such as T.J. Maxx and Family Dollar. Is this a sign they are being discontinued?

These markdowns come on the heels of news that the Bratz line of dolls is being discontinued for 2014 so that they can be revamped for 2015. Right before this news broke, Bratz dolls went on clearance too, and now many stores are completely sold out of Bratz.

La Dee Da debuted at the New York City Toy Fair in February of 2013. They’re manufactured by Spin Master. Spin Master is perhaps best known as the creators of the Liv doll. Liv was popular with children and adult collectors because of her realistic appearance and proportions. However, sales were declining due to increased competition from other doll lines, and in the Fall of 2012, Spin Master discontinued Liv. La Dee Da was introduced as a replacement for Liv (if you go to the Liv website, there is a prominent link to the La Dee Da website). Liv was just like the girls who played with her, and maybe that was the problem. Maybe she just wasn’t interesting enough. Whereas La Dee Da was far more interesting. She and her friends attended fashion school in New York City (yes, really). Even their stylized appearance and wardrobe seemed more exciting than Liv. But only one year after making their debut, La Dee Da dolls have been relegated to the clearance aisle.

The same holds true for Pinkie Cooper, which also debuted at the New York Toy Fair in 2013. Pinkie Cooper was created by Carter Bryant, the creator of Bratz. She and her friends Ginger and Pepper are anthropomorphized dogs who – get this – also attend fashion school in New York City. But now Pinkie and her friends are also on clearance. Pinkie is cute, but she’s also a little strange. She has long hair on either side of her head, like dog ears, but no hair on top of her head. This makes her look like she suffers from male-pattern baldness (although she looks awfully cute in a hat). But Pinkie isn’t the first hybrid dog-girl doll. In 1966 Hasbro introduced Peteena, a poodle fashion doll. Introduced, and discontinued, in the same year. It looks like Pinkie Cooper is destined for the same fate. While rumors are swirling on the Internet, I have yet to find an official online source that mentions Pinkie being discontinued. Pinkie was popular with adult collectors as a cheaper alternative to Japanese anthro BJDs, but perhaps little girls weren’t ready for, or interested in, the concept of an anthropomorphized dog doll. Or maybe making a doll attend fashion school in New York City is the kiss of death.

Last year I bought a couple of La Dee Da dolls. I thought they were really cute when I saw them in the store, but when I got them home and took them out of their boxes, I wasn’t really impressed with them. Their arms aren’t articulated. Their legs are, but the quality of production and articulation isn’t that great. And their heads are so huge that the dolls tipped over when I tried to stand them up. Here’s one of my La Dee Da dolls, Dee Loves Le Bun:

Capture

I also purchased a Pinkie Cooper doll. I bought the Pinkie Cooper Deluxe Travel Collection doll, Pinkie in London.

As odd as I thought she was, she was also somewhat endearing. I particularly liked the Deluxe Travel Collection dolls, and I thought their boxes were adorable. I loved the brown and pink color combination and the fact that the box had a pink handle to easily carry the doll.

I don’t know if I’ll really miss the La Dee Da girls if they are in fact going to be discontinued. Maybe they were a little too outrageous or over the top. However, I might be a little sad to see Pinkie Cooper go. As strange as the concept of a dog fashion doll is, I find her to be really sweet. I can see her appealing to very little girls because she’s not hypersexualized like some fashion doll lines arguably are. And on the upside, Peteena dolls sell for big bucks on the secondary market these days. So if you see a Pinkie Cooper doll on clearance, you might want to buy it and save it for 40 or 50 years.

Has anyone heard any concrete news about La Dee Da and Pinkie Cooper being discontinued? Please share!

Update: This Mommy and Gracie Show video confirms that Pinkie Cooper is being discontinued. They went to Toy Fair this year, and the people at The Bridge Direct booth told them that Pinkie will no longer be produced.

Update #2: La Dee Da dolls have been discontinued. Kewpie from Confessions of a Doll Collector’s Daughter emailed Spin Master, who confirmed that the dolls will no longer be produced.

Monster High Slowman “Slow Mo” Mortavitch

5

After months of searching, I finally found the elusive Slow Mo at Walmart this past weekend. Slow Mo debuted at last year’s San Diego Comic Con as part of the Ghoul Spirit budget line. While the other three Ghoul Spirit dolls – Frankie, Spectra, and Venus – have been available since late last year, Slow Mo had been pretty scarce. Rumor had it that the first dolls produced were recalled due to a production error: he had claws, like Clawd Wolf, instead of hands. I thought this might be a rumor circulating around the Internet until Lark from It’s Toy Time reviewed her Slow Mo doll, which she bought from Amazon during the very brief time that he was available during his initial release late last year. As you will see from her pictures, her Slow Mo has claws instead of hands. But this problem has since been corrected, and the new, improved Slow Mo has been slowly making his way to large retailers such as Target and Walmart.

1

2

Slowman “Slow Mo” Mortavitch is the son of Zombies. In the Monster High movies and webisodes, he is portrayed as Ghoulia’s love interest. But he has to compete for Ghoulia’s affections with another zombie boy, Don of the Dead. The Slow Mo doll looks different from the cartoon version of Slow Mo. For starters, the doll’s hair stands straight up, whereas in the cartoon it’s more of a shaggy flat top. Dolly Slow Mo has rooted hair that is gelled to stay upright, with the rest of his scalp is flocked to simulate a buzzcut. Also in the cartoon version, one of Slow Mo’s eyes is bigger than the other, and his pupils glance in opposite directions, conveying the poor kid’s less-than-stellar intellect. I’m sure it’s easier for Mattel to manufacture a more uniform-looking doll, but I’ve seen a Slow Mo custom doll that looks more like the cartoon version of Slow Mo than Mattel’s doll, so it can be done. Even Slow Mo’s skullette logo has the disproportionate eyes and the flat, shaggy hair of the cartoon version of Slow Mo.

3

Slow Mo wears an expression that’s perhaps slightly vacant but sweet. Being a zombie, he moans but he doesn’t talk. And Ghoulia likes the strong, silent type.

9

12

Slow Mo wears a purple t-shirt with a dripping Monster High shield design, blue knee-length shorts, and black high tops. I would have liked to see Slow Mo in the clothes he wears in the cartoons and movies – long pants and his varsity jacket. I don’t know why Slow Mo is part of the Ghoul Spirit team (which, let’s face it, is one step below the Fearleading Squad). He is, after all, on the Casketball team. I’m not sure how that works since he’s a slow-moving zombie, but it’s his favorite sport.

10

The only Monster High boy to come in a varsity jacket is Heath, even though Gil and Clawd, in addition to Slow Mo, wear them too. Maybe someday Mattel will release a varsity fashion pack for the boys, so they can all wear their varsity jackets. Heck, the boy dolls need more fashion packs, period. But rather than make Slow Mo an athlete, the Slow Mo doll is relegated to being on the Ghoul Spirit team. He comes with a school pennant to wave at the Pep Rally. Poor ghoul. Slow Mo deserves better.

4

Being a budget-line doll, Slow Mo doesn’t come with a stand. However, he stands very well on his own in his cool monster high-tops. The tread on the bottom of his high-tops are cleverly designed in a brain pattern, you know, ‘cuz he’s a zombie.

15

Now that Ghoulia has been reunited with Slow Mo, they can do all sorts of things together. Ghoulia can give Slow Mo a ride to school on her moped.

Ghoulia and Slow Mo have so much in common that it’s easy to see why they fall for each other.

25

26

27

I’m very happy to have Slow Mo. Although I’d prefer he look more like the cartoon version, I think he’s sweet, and I’m glad my Ghoulia can finally be reunited with her boyfriend. I’d been checking my local stores on a regular basis for Slow Mo because I refuse to pay more than retail for him on Amazon or eBay from sellers who claim they will get him in stock within 30 days. These sellers have been selling “pre-orders” of Slow Mo since the doll was first debuted at Comic Con – for over-inflated prices. This is a pet peeve of mine (*stepping on soapbox*). If a doll is a pre-order, then it hasn’t been released yet. These sellers call the doll “hard to find,” but it’s hard to find because it hasn’t been released yet! And it’s not just sellers on Amazon or eBay. Some established online doll dealer websites have been pricing the pre-orders at two or three times the retail price. I could understand dolls commanding inflated prices on the secondary market, when they’re no longer in production, but when dealers who are allowed to buy wholesale from Mattel sell new dolls at over-inflated prices, it’s nothing less than scalping. And in my experience, most of the dolls that create a frenzy when news of its release is first announced eventually make it to the stores, even if it takes several months. The only doll I pre-ordered, at $25 more than retail, was the I Love Fashion Scarah Screams, a Toys R Us exclusive. I really wanted it, and I thought I might never see it in stores. This was in October. But by December, just in time for Christmas, the shelves of TRU were overflowing with Scarahs, and I still see her in abundance when I go to my local TRU. So I’ve learned my lesson regarding pre-orders. Since then I’ve found other “hard-to-find” dolls, including Scaris Deuce, Power Ghouls Cat-Atrophe, and the Heath and Abbey Home Ick two-pack in stores, at retail price. If you want to get your hands on Slow Mo, don’t pay scalpers’ prices. It looks like Slow Mo is now becoming more available at brick-and-mortar retailers – which means the inflated prices on Amazon and eBay will go down too. (*stepping off soapbox*).

All this fuss over me?

All this fuss over me?

Have you found Slow Mo? Have you ever paid scalper prices for a doll you really wanted?

Monster High Picnic Casket for 2

1

2

If you’ve been watching the Monster High webisodes on YouTube, then you probably know that Frankie Stein and Jackson Jekyll are an item. Frankie Stein and Holt Hyde are an item too. This gives new meaning to the term “It’s complicated.” But it’s not as weird as it sounds. Jackson and Holt are two sides of the same person. And Frankie likes them both. But in the Monster High webisode Hyde Your Heart, Frankie decides to just be friends with both boys. Or does she?

Is love in the air for Jackson and Frankie?

Is love in the air for Jackson and Frankie?

The artwork on the box seems to suggest that it is.

The artwork on the box seems to suggest that it is.

Are Frankie and Jackson an item? The packaging for the Picnic Casket for 2 set hints at a relationship. Good for them! In my opinion, Frankie is better off with Jackson, because Holt is too rash and impetuous. The Picnic Casket for 2 set sees Frankie and Jackson ready to enjoy a picnic together. The dolls are dressed in outfits that complement each other, from the clothing colors right down to the yellow streaks in their hair. Their clothing seems very “collegiate” with their matching cardigan sweaters.

5

Jackson wears a grey checked sweater, blue t-shirt with a yin-yang design (very appropriate for a boy with dual personalities), and yellow trousers. His sweater is rolled up to the elbows and kept in place with clear plastic bands. But I might remove them and roll down his sleeves. I don’t like Jackson to be too hip.

6

His glasses are sewn to his hair, making them permanently perched on his head. I like Jackson better with his glasses on, so I might cut the threads and put his glasses on his face. The nerdier, the better, I always say.

Hey! I need my glasses but they're stuck to my head.

Hey! I need my glasses but they’re stuck to my head.

Frankie complements Jackson’s outfit both in style and in color. She also wears a grey sweater. Her grey blouse has a yellow Peter Pan collar that I find adorable. Her skirt is a blue plaid in her trademark stitches pattern and is cinched at the waist with a pretty yellow bow. This might be one of my all-time favorite Frankies because her outfit is a little more vintage-inspired than her usual outfits. I also really like how her hair is parted on the side, with side-swept bangs. The only issue I had with her hair is that a couple of clumps of it came out while I was photographing her. I don’t usually have this problem with Monster High dolls.

7

Today Jackson and Frankie planned to have a picnic. Frankie brought her picnic casket full of goodies she made herself.

10

11

However, rainy weather forced them to move the picnic indoors. Jackson doesn’t mind the rain so much, but rain really doesn’t mix with Frankie’s, um, electric personality. So they moved the picnic to the creepateria.

What a spread

What a spread

14

16

18

So, is love in the air for these two? It’s hard to tell, but you know what they say: the way to a monster’s heart is through his stomach.

I made it myself
